Suma Wali's personal experience, as a woman and a refugee, inspires her work for uprooted women's human rights. A native of Afghanistan, Ms. Wali is currently President of Refugee Women in Development, a non-profit organization that advocates for uprooted women and girls whose rights have been violated as refugees. Ms. Wali has returned from a recent UN mission to Pakistan to assess Afghan refugee women's human rights needs and concerns. Upon her return, she provided testimony to the US Congress, the State Department and human rights and women's groups on the situation of Afghan women. She was awarded the 1999 Ginetta Sagan Award of Amnesty International and the 1989 Women of Vision Award for her pioneering work in addressing violence against women in the US.
