Hilda Sabato is a Professor of history at University of Buenos Aires, a Senior Researcher of the National Research Council of Argentina (CONICET) and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Latin American Studies. Her research has focused upon nineteenth century Argentine history. Professor Sabato has worked on several aspects of the development of capitalism in Argentina, such as the transformations of the agrarian structure in the province of Buenos Aires, the formation of the land and the labor markets, and the economic and social aspects of immigration. She has published numerous articles in academic journals, and her most recent book is: La política en las calles. Entre el voto y la movilización. Buenos Aires, 1862'1880 (Sudamericana, Buenos Aires, 1998). Hilda Sabato will discuss issues related to political citizenship and the formation of the public sphere in Latin America during the second half of the nineteenth century.
