Prior to her appointment at the Human Rights Campaign, Birch was worldwide director of litigation and human resources counsel for Apple Computer Inc., where she was also instrumental in the development of Apple's landmark domestic-partnership and non-discrimination policies. She also served as general counsel of Claris Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple. "I believe the route to equality is in reaching well beyond our own community or even our community's needs and challenges. It is in recognizing that the parents of James Byrd grieved as deeply and as profoundly as the parents of Matthew Shepard. Both lost their sons. It is in those moments when we can find that common ground and use it to translate our essential humanity as a GLBT community that we move forward." - Elizabeth Birch  Event history: Submitted by rwchin on 09-Mar-2000;
