He is the man the world can thank for his leadership in keeping dams out of the Grand Canyon, Dinosaur National Monument and the Yukon and for helping to preserve wildlands in Kings Canyon, the North Cascades, the Redwoods, Alaska, Cape Cod and Point Reyes. He is the founder of Earth Island Institute and Friends of the Earth and the cofounder of the League of Conservation Voters. He is a three time nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.
