The sixth film of the series (Program change): "Red Desert" (Il Deserto Rosso) (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1964) Starring Monica Vitti and Richard Harris Italian with English subtitles. "Il Deserto Rosso was Antonioi's first colour film, preceding the better-known Blow Up by a couple of years. As in most of Antonioni's films the story itself is quite slight- a young woman in industrial Ravenna who has had a nervous breakdown and has attempted suicide embarks tentatively on an affair- but what is absolutely astounding is Antonioni's use of the industrial landscape (and especially its colours) to evoke his central character's inner state. This is Antonioni at his most painterly, and it is also one of the great films on the modern city. The film received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1965. Antonioni was presented with and Honorary Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Academy Awards ceremony in 1995."
