Abstract 

Capacity, transparency and cost are driving the development of next generation 
optical networks. Avanex photonic processors enable next generation optical 
networks today. This talk will introduce Avanex photonic processors and compare 
them to existing alternative technologies.

Speaker bio:

Dr. Giovanni Barbarossa joined Avanex Corporation in February of this year
as director of Research and Development. His responsibilities include
device research and development, instrumentation, tools and integration
development and engineering services. He was with Agilent Technologies
earlier, where he had management responsibilities for Planar Lightwave
Circuits research and development in the Optical Networking Division. Prior
to that, he was at Lucent Technologies, where he was involved in product
design and process technology management in the Optical Application
Specific Integrated Circuits Department. Dr. Barbarossa is also a former
faculty member of Polytechnic of Bari, Italy and was an assistant
researcher in the Oxide Glasses Group at British Telecom Laboratories.

Dr. Barbarossa received his Ph.D. in electronics engineering from the
University of Glasgow and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering,
cum laude, from the University of Bari, Italy.
