Abstract Capacity, transparency and cost are driving the development of next generation optical networks. Avanex photonic processors enable next generation optical networks today. This talk will introduce Avanex photonic processors and compare them to existing alternative technologies. Speaker bio: Dr. Giovanni Barbarossa joined Avanex Corporation in February of this year as director of Research and Development. His responsibilities include device research and development, instrumentation, tools and integration development and engineering services. He was with Agilent Technologies earlier, where he had management responsibilities for Planar Lightwave Circuits research and development in the Optical Networking Division. Prior to that, he was at Lucent Technologies, where he was involved in product design and process technology management in the Optical Application Specific Integrated Circuits Department. Dr. Barbarossa is also a former faculty member of Polytechnic of Bari, Italy and was an assistant researcher in the Oxide Glasses Group at British Telecom Laboratories. Dr. Barbarossa received his Ph.D. in electronics engineering from the University of Glasgow and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering, cum laude, from the University of Bari, Italy.
